Barkley House Today and the Vision for the Future

Through a unique partnership, the VHC can refer clients to Stoney Creek Hotel and Conference Center’s Barkley House rooms. The Barkley House rooms are an interim option while the MU College of Veterinary Medicine continues raising funds for a facility dedicated to the Barkley House concept.

The Barkley House advisory board worked with the management at Stoney Creek to reserve two rooms designed specifically for recovering pets. The rooms have been refurbished with a non-slip, non-porous floor for easy clean-up, hypoallergenic bedding for pets and their owners, and supplies needed for animals undergoing medical care. The rooms also offer reading materials aimed at pet owners.

The Barkley House rooms are the only rooms at Stoney Creek designed with appropriate amenities for guests with pets. The rooms are reserved for referred clients of the VHC. However, if the rooms are not being used for clients, they are available to other guests on a limited basis.  VHC clients will be given all the necessary information for referral upon the scheduling of treatment.

Although the goal is to one day build a facility that is designed to provide lodging for clients and their pets, Barkley House is a project, not a specific building. Leaders at the College of Veterinary Medicine and within Columbia are looking at various options that can meet the needs of clients and provide a home away from home for recovering pets.

I Gave to Barkley House in the Past. How Was My Gift Used?

Thanks to the many supporters and donors of Barkley House, we have been able to build a solid foundation of informed and engaged support to pursue ways to make Barkley House a reality.

  • Some donations to Barkley House have been invested in promotional materials, such as brochures and logo wear, to encourage additional support.
  • A portion of the money given for Barkley House has been invested in retrofitting the rooms at Stoney Creek Hotel and Conference Center to make them pet-friendly and conducive to healing.
  • A large portion of the money given for Barkley House has been invested and is earning interest to be used in the next phase of Barkley House.
  • Some donations are restricted and will be used for a specific purpose that the donor designated when Barkley House moves into a permanent home.

Barkley House: A Dream Whose Time has Come

Barkley was a rescued Great Pyrenees who underwent treatment for bone cancer at the University of Missouri Veterinary Health Center (VHC). When he fell ill, his owner would drive him more than two hours each way every time he received radiation treatments. However, when she broke her ankle, she could no longer make the drive. […]
